Women Making Money

Governor Palin And The Israeli Fighter Pilot

By Ginger - February 1, 2011 - 07:15 UTC - 16 Comments

Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin With Former Israeli Fighter Pilot Elan Frank

From September of 2008, this is a great article about a former Israeli fight jet pilot who filmed a documentary on three extraordinary women, including then Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. Here is what I call the money quote:

“I have a lot of authentic footage that shows who she really is. You can tell a lot about her from that. She really is one of us.”- former Israeli fighter pilot turned film director , Elan Frank, speaking of Governor Sarah Palin.

From ynetnews.com

Sarah Palin mesmerizes Israeli filmmaker

Los Angeles-based director Elan Frank met Alaska’s governor, Republican vice-presidential hopeful several months ago while filming documentary about extraordinary women, and was hooked.

by Dana Zimmerman

“Sarah Palin is a very special woman. She has a tranquility about her, no matter what the situation is,” this is how Elan Frank, a California-based Israeli filmmaker, chooses to describe the Republican Party’s newly chosen vice-presidential hopeful.

Frank shadowed Palin, who is the presiding governor of Alaska, for three days some three months ago, as part of a documentary he made about extraordinary women around the world.

Frank, 52, has been living in Los Angeles for the past 12 years. He first visited Alaska in 1983, when he was given a year’s leave from the Israeli Air Force, where he served as a fighter pilot.

“I made it a point to come back to Alaska every three years or so, since. It’s a very hard country. The real final frontier. They have seven men for every woman, so I thought about making a film about women in Alaska. I did some research, and then I thought – ‘well, why focus only on Alaska? Why not focus on women worldwide and make a film about women empowerment?’”

Frank sent film crews to Nepal and the Negev, to follow two extraordinary women, and decided to follow three Alaskan women himself – a teacher, a pilot and the new governor.

“I wasn’t planning on focusing on famous characters, but Palin’s story is so unique I decided to include her. She is the first woman of Alaska, which isn’t something to be treated lightly; not to mention a former beauty queen, basketball player, fisherwoman and hunter – and a mother of four (Frank’s film followed Palin before she has her fifth child). I saw something amazing there,” he said.

Each day, Inc.'s reporters scour the Web for the most important and interesting news to entrepreneurs. Here's what we found today:

Twitter's sky-high valuation. Is the microblogging start-up really worth $10 billion? The eye-popping figure is being bandied about in Silicon Valley, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reports that both Google and Facebook have engaged in "low-level talks" recently to snap up Twitter. Could such rich valuations—Facebook at $50 billion, Groupon at $6 billion and the Huffington Post at $315 million—lead to another tech bubble? A warning from Ethan Kurzweil of Bessemer Venture Partners: "Are these prices justifiable based on financial multiples? No."

Turning your site into a profit center. Ben Lerer, founder of Thrillist.com and Inc. TV veteran, knows a thing or two about making money off of digital content. After all, Thrillist has millions of subscribers, a devoted following, and, following the recent acquisition of JackThreads.com, a bona-fide commerce arm. In a recent post for OPEN Forum, Lerer discusses the need to monetize your site, even if that means going outside your traditional business model. "In the future, the smartest content companies are going to find ways to leverage their big audience to make money in commerce," Lerer writes. "What those guys would be well-served to think about is how best to otherwise monetize the audience they have, and I don't think selling content on the iPad is the answer." The same theory can be applied to commerce companies, that is, building legitimate content to keep audiences interested, Lerer says.

Unemployment reaches lowest levels in three years. Even with severe weather and snowstorms causing temporary layoffs over the last month, unemployment levels continue to steadily decrease. The New York Times reports unemployment applications sunk to their lowest point since July 2008. Unemployment applications currently stand at about 383,000, significantly lower than the recession's low point in March 2009, when applications peaked at 651,000. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, unemployment applications are a good barometer of companies' willingness to hire, but applications would need to sit consistently below 375,000 to indicate a significant decline in the unemployment rate. Nearly 14 million people remain out of work, and 9.4 million people continue to receive unemployment aid.

Maybe the clothes do make the business woman. Months ago, the media had a field day after Swiss Bank UBS AG crafted a detailed 43-page employee code instructing staff members on how to "dress to impress."  Now, Harvard Business Review reports that the Center for Work-Life Policy has produced new research showing that the Swiss bank wasn't too far off by suggesting a dress code for women.  After surveying over a thousand males and females working in corporate America, more than half of the women agreed that not only does a woman in a high position need to dress conservatively, but that clothing and success go hand-in-hand. The question is who's responsible for providing business women with "constructive feedback" on what to wear and how to wear it. Perhaps their male colleagues?  Yeah, right.

From penalty box to corporate suite. It's an unspoken truth: professional athlete entrepreneurs are usually just glorified spokespeople. But today's OPEN Forum has the story of Zenon Konopka, a center for the New York Islanders, who, according to the story, is as passionate about his two businesses, Prime Wine Products and Pure Press Oil, as he is about hockey.  As one colleague tells OPEN Forum, "He calls before his pregame naps to talk business, and he texts me at two in the morning with ideas. If he didn't put money in, I would have paid him to be a part of this." Konopka first learned about business as a kid growing up in Ontario, selling produce at a local market, and later, buying a local pub with his family. Now, Konopka is hoping to keep the tradition of running a family business alive. He tells OPEN Forum, "I want to build a business big enough and profitable enough that I have the luxury to have my friends and family involved in the business, working in the business, and able to grow with the business."

BBC's unnoffical archivist. In a effort save money, the BBC announced a couple of months ago that it has plans to cut 172 websites. But fear not. An anonymous good samaritan has taken the time to archive the doomed sites in a BitTorrent file for public access. The cost for copying, archiving, and redistributing the online content from all 172 websites? A mere $3.99. "The purpose of this project is to show how the entire 172 public facing websites that are earmarked for deletion have been copied, archived, distributed and republished online - independently - for the price of a cup of Starbucks coffee," according to the anonymous archivist.

Here is the busy economic schedule for the coming week.

Egpyt

From the NY Times: Military Offers Assurances to Egypt and Neighbors

From the WSJ: Egypt's Military Moves to Clear Tahrir Square

From the Financial Times: Egyptian youth groups seek army talks

Below is a summary of the previous week, mostly in graphs.

Trade Deficit increased in December

Click on graphs for larger image in graph gallery.

The first graph shows the monthly U.S. exports and imports in dollars through December 2010.

December exports were $163.0 billion, up from $160.1 billion in November. December imports were $203.5 billion, up from $198.5 billion in November.

Imports had been mostly flat since May, but increased again in December. Exports have started increasing again after the mid-year slowdown.

The second graph shows the U.S. trade deficit, with and without petroleum, through December.

The blue line is the total deficit, and the black line is the petroleum deficit, and the red line is the trade deficit ex-petroleum products. The trade deficit was $40.6 billion, up from $38.3 billion in November.

The petroleum deficit increased in December as both quantity and import prices continued to rise - averaging $79.78 in December. Prices will be even higher in January. Once again oil and China deficits are essentially the entire trade deficit (or even more).

CoreLogic: House Prices declined 1.8% in December

This graph shows the national CoreLogic HPI data since 1976. January 2000 = 100.

The index is down 5.46% over the last year, and off 31.6% from the peak.

This is the fifth straight month of year-over-year declines, and the sixth straight month of month-to-month declines. The index is only 0.07% above the low set in March 2009 (essentially at the low), and I expect to see a new post-bubble low for this index with the January release.

NFIB: Small Business Optimism Index increases in January

From National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB): "The National Federation of Independent Business Index of Small Business Optimism rose 1.5 points in January, a modest increase, opening the new year with a reading of 94.1."

This graph shows the small business optimism index since 1986. The index increased to 94.1 in January from 92.6 in December.

Although still fairly low, this is the highest level for the index since December 2007.

This graph shows the net hiring plans over the next three months.

Hiring plans decreased slightly in January but are still positive.

The recovery is sluggish for the small business optimism index (probably because of the high concentration of real estate related companies), but this is the highest level for the optimism index since December 2007.

Consumer Sentiment increases slightly in February

The preliminary Reuters / University of Michigan consumer sentiment index increased to 75.1 in February from 74.2 in January.

This was at the consensus forecast of 75.0.

Sentiment is still at levels usually associated with a recession - and sentiment is well below the pre-recession levels.

Other Economic Stories ...

• From Treasury: Proposed plan for Fannie and Freddie press release and here is the report

• AAR: Rail Traffic increases in January

• Ceridian-UCLA: Diesel Fuel index decreases slightly in January

• Bernanke Testimony: The Economic Outlook and Monetary and Fiscal Policy

• From NY Fed Vice President Brian Sack: Implementing the Federal Reserve’s Asset Purchase Program

• CoStar: Commercial Real Estate prices increased slightly in December

• From RealtyTrac: Foreclosure Activity Increases 1 Percent in January

• Unofficial Problem Bank list at 944 Institutions

Best wishes to all!

Politico also reports that Issa has built a preliminary list of investigations that he will have Oversight conduct into White House actions over the past two years. None of them will surprise anyone, but the list seems perhaps a little more modest than Democrats may have feared:

According to an outline of the committee’s hearing topics obtained by POLITICO, the House Oversight and Government Reform is also planning to investigate how regulation impacts job creation, the role of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the foreclosure crisis; recalls at the Food and Drug Administration and the failure of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission to agree on the causes of the market meltdown. …

Despite his bombastic reputation, Issa has tried to project a more subtle image in the days leading up to his takeover of the committee. He’s trying to project an image of being a stickler for government waste and not a partisan bomb thrower with an eye fixed on ruining the Obama administration. A look at the preliminary hearing schedule illustrates that Issa plans to stay away from hurling subpoenas at the White House.

Stimulus oversight isn’t among the early hearings, which may come as a surprise since Issa recently met with Vice President Joe Biden to discuss stimulus spending. In one of his three Sunday show appearances this week, Issa even said Congress should share in the blame for what he considers the mismanagement of the stimulus.

Still, the Issa agenda will take aim at what he believes are missteps by the administration.

In investigating the impact of regulation on job creation, the committee plans to ask why the economy hasn’t “created the private sector jobs the president has promised,” and he’s calling in business leaders to explain “about the government regulations that are doing the most harm to job creation efforts.”

It looks as though Issa plans to start on issues where he can get bipartisan consensus for probes and work on building some momentum.  I’m a little surprised that Issa hasn’t included, even in that sense, a probe of the firing of Inspector General Gerald Walpin and the expanded use of “czars” by this administration.  The termination of the IG for his opposition to a deal cut with an Obama ally amounts to a rebuke of Congress, which supposedly gave IGs job security so that they would do their work without fear of retribution from the executive branch.  The “czars” also represent an end run in at least some cases around Congressional oversight.

If a bipartisan consensus cannot be generated to protect Congress’ constitutional privileges, then perhaps bipartisanship in this context is overrated, and Issa should consider expanding his definition of “corruption” a little wider.

Working at home sounds like a good idea to you. Only, you are not sure what to do in order to make some money. Here are some suggestions that have worked well for other entrepreneurs. Check into any of these work at home opportunities and see which one strikes a chord with you...

Ø House sitting - During vacation time, or extended periods of time away from home, many people would like to have their houses checked on for safety reasons. A house sitter visits the house, monitors the lights, picks up newspapers

or mail, etc. Generally speaking, the house sitter gives the external appearance that the house is being lived in.

Ø Pet sitting - While on vacation or away from home for an extended time, many pet owners want their pets to stay

at home and be taken care of. This is a great work at home opportunity for animal lovers who want to make money. This is where the pet sitter comes in. The pet sitter will come to feed the animals, make certain they are ok, and play with them for a bit. During some arrangements, this will be combined with house sitting.

In other situations, you can start your own at-home pet kennel. Your clients would drop off their pets with you for the day. This can be a rewarding work at home business since you can offer varying amenities to make more money. For instance, one work at home pet sitting service played classical music for the pets to help relax them. Pet sitting has become very profitable for animal lovers who want to make money at home.

Ø Musician - Depending on your skill, there are gigs available in your area. Weddings, retirement communities, special events, parties, etc. Schedule your engagements, go entertain, and keep records of it. Here is a work at home business that will make you money while also enjoying what you do.

Ø Mystery shopping - You will not get rich at doing this, but it can be an enjoyable way to make money while

working at home. Banks, retail shops, restaurants, medical offices, and etc. all are in need of mystery shoppers to help monitor various aspects of their business.

Ø Crafts - There is such a wide variety of ways to put your hobby to use in order to work at home while making money. Start selling your wares at farmer's markets, at trade shows, festivals, etc.

Ø Photography - Convert your photography skills into a marketable endeavor. Sell your photography at craft fairs, art co-ops, trade shows, etc. Schedule your showings at home, prepare for the events, and do your public relations of your final product.

Ø Artistry - painting, drawing, sculpturing, wood carving

Ø Desktop publishing - Amongst other services you can provide, print up business cards, letterhead, brochures, etc. for others. All you need is a home computer with the proper software.

Ø Telecommuting - With the higher costs of operating a brick and mortar establishment, many firms are looking for someone to work at home. Telecommuting is becoming more popular every day.

Ø Online auctions - Everyone has heard of Ebay and how easy it is to make money at home from. There also are a multitude of other online auction sites you can operate out of your own home. Or, start your own.

Ø Bookkeeping - Many firms are searching for someone to outsource their record keeping (bookkeeping) to. You will probably need to supply the accounting software and keep in regular contact with the client. Simply call around and ask - you may be surprised at how many positive responses you receive.

Ø Consulting - Use your area of expertise and provide others with ways to improve their business.

Ø Public speaking - Either offer your own topics, or become an independent contractor for a speaking firm.

Ø Pest control - Business owners and individuals alike are plagued by insects at times and would welcome your help.

Ø Flight instruction - Many a potential pilot has needed an independent flight instructor to help them with

their flying program. Work at home and make money while doing it. Get your name out there.

Ø Landscaping - Help either individual households or businesses with their lawns. This can be another lucrative work at home way to make money. Once you build your clientele, you will be surprised how quickly the word spreads.

Ø Tutoring/Teaching - Use your area of expertise to help others learn. Schedule your classes from your home office and charge the going rate.

Ø Farming - Sell your homegrown produce at farmer's markets. The public loves meeting the food producers. You can offer them a wealth of information about your food, how it is grown, share recipes, etc.

The above are only a few of the many opportunities available to you to operate a home-based business and make money. The key to success in your work at home business depends on you, your motivation, and your fortitude. Good luck!

I stumbled upon Moola by accident. On my quest to make money online, I was looking at some forums. One of them suggested a site were you get paid to play video games. I love making money online and I love video games so this sounded perfect.

Moola is a pretty cool site. Moola starts you of with 1 cent. The goal is to bet that one cent on one of their games and double up enough to make serious cash. This is easier said than done and I have not won more than 5 consecutive games in a row.

The games are really fun though. As of the date this article is published there are 3 games. They are "Gold Rush", "Hi-Lo", and "Ro-Sham-Bo-Fu". Gold Rush is a game with 6 rounds in which you have 6 nuggets. The goal is to get your nuggets to outweigh the opponents nuggets and win that round. Once you win a round, that score goes to your final total. The person with the most points at the end wins. Sounds a little complicated but it is really easy. The only problem I have with this game is that it ends in a tie too often. "Hi-Lo" is easy enough. You try and guess if the next card is going to be higher or lower than the last card. The strategy come in when you have to decided when to lock down. This is my favorite game on the site. "Ro-Sham-Bo-Fu" is your standard rock-paper-scissors with a twist. Each round you are offered a bonus if you don't use the selected motion. The game is the most strategic of all the games and requires a lot of thinking.

Before you can play any of these games you have to watch an advertisement and answer a question about it. I hate looking at advertisements but they do have to make that penny somehow. It's kind of clever really. You will definitely have to remember the commercial.

There are a number of other ways to make money on Moola. The one I like the most is the Search and Win category. You simply use their Snap.com search engine and once a day you get a bonus booster. A bonus booster wheel is like a Wheel of Fortune wheel with a bunch of cent values on it. They have a few big ones on it but I doubt anyone will ever get it. The Snap.com search engine is kind of cool too. It previews all of the sites on a sidebar before you view them. Another way to make money is going to the Booster Zone. Once there you will find a Booster Shopping Mall and a Cash Back section. This is a kind of CashCrate-esque section of the site where you make money filling out offers. I personally only like free offers because I don't have a credit card and it all seems a bit sketchy. But for those of you who love filling out offers this portion of the site is great!

The referral section is the most unique of its kind. No one can simply go to Moola and sign up for an account. A person has to be referred to use the site. Each member is given a few referrals at a time to give away. The referral section is based on a 4 tier system. The way you make money on referrals is by people filling out offers or cashing out. Cashing out is hard to do if you only play the games so if you are looking to make money you have to either do some of the offers, refer a lot of people, or get really REALLY lucky.

Overall, I really like Moola. You probably won't make a lot of money online but you WILL have fun. If you need a referral either go to the Moola Invites Forum or go to my Content Producer website. I have a few referrals if you want to be a part of this growing and fun community.
